American Meatloaf with Ketchup Glaze

This American-style meatloaf recipe with a rich ketchup glaze on top and inside the loaf is sure to become one of your go-to comfort meals.

Ingredients:

For the meatloaf

  • 500 g minced beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon wholegrain mustard
  • ½ bunch of parsley
  • 6 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 50 ml milk
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper
  • Butter or oil for greasing the dish

For the glaze

  • 100 ml ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Wash and finely chop the parsley. Peel and finely dice the onion.
  3. Place the minced beef in a large bowl. Crush the garlic over it and add the remaining ingredients.
  4. Mix thoroughly. Use a small loaf tin or ovenproof dish that fits the mixture snugly, and grease it beforehand.
  5. Bake the meatloaf for 45 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile, prepare the glaze by mixing all the glaze ingredients. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. After 45 minutes, carefully turn the meatloaf out onto a baking dish. Spread the glaze evenly over the top and sides. Return to the oven for another 10 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the meatloaf rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.
