Sardinhas Assadas

Sardinhas Assadas are delicious grilled sardines, a simple and authentic Portuguese dish. Serve the grilled sardines with bread and optionally a fresh salad. Every region in Portugal may have its own small variations, so feel free to experiment with flavours and ingredients!

Serves: 4
Preparation: 10 min
Marinating: 15 min
Cooking time: 20 min

Ingredients:

  • Fresh whole sardines, cleaned
  • Coarse sea salt
  • Olive oil
  • 2 lemons
  • Fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the barbecue to medium heat.
  2. Marinate the sardines with sea salt and olive oil for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Slice some bread (depending on the number of sardines) and briefly grill it on the barbecue.
  4. Wash and finely chop the parsley.

Method:

  1. Grill the sardines on both sides until cooked and crispy, about 3โ€“4 minutes per side.
  2. Remove the sardines from the barbecue and place them on the grilled bread.
  3. Generously drizzle olive oil over the sardines and bread.
  4. Cut a garlic clove in half and rub it over the grilled bread for extra flavour.
  5. Drizzle with fresh lemon juice.
  6. Sprinkle with finely chopped parsley.
