Carapaus à Algarvia

A simple and traditional recipe from the Algarve, where the mackerel is grilled and served with olive oil, garlic, and lemon.

Ingredients:

  • 4 fresh mackerel
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 bunch of fresh coriander and/or parsley

Preparation:

  1. Clean the mackerel, rinse under cold water, and pat dry.
  2. Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves.
  3. Squeeze the lemon.
  4. Wash and finely chop the coriander and/or parsley.

Method:

  1. Marinate the mackerel with olive oil, garlic, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Leave to rest for 15–20 minutes.
  2. Grill the mackerel on a hot barbecue or grill pan for 3–4 minutes on each side until the skin is crispy.
  3. Serve with lemon juice and sprinkle with fresh coriander or parsley.

Delicious with: boiled potatoes, grilled vegetables, or a fresh tomato salad.
