Sweet potato
The sweet potato, also known as batata, is a versatile vegetable originally from Central and South America. This vegetable is popular for its naturally sweet flavour, soft texture, and rich nutritional value. Sweet potatoes come in various colours, such as orange, white, purple, and red, and are an excellent source of fibre, vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium.
Buying and storing
When buying sweet potatoes, look for firm ones without soft spots, cracks, or mould. Avoid potatoes with sprouts, as these are less fresh.
Store sweet potatoes in a cool, dark place, but not in the fridge. Cold temperatures can alter their texture and make them less tasty. Under the right conditions, they will keep for up to two weeks. For longer storage, you can cook, mash, and freeze them.
In the kitchen
Sweet potatoes are extremely versatile and can be prepared in many ways. Bake, roast, steam, or boil them to create a wide range of dishes. They are perfect for:
- Chips
- Mashed potato
- Soups
- Salads
- Desserts
When preparing sweet potatoes, you don't always need to remove the skin; it contains many nutrients and becomes soft when cooked or baked.
