Gember pruimen chutney

Ginger plum chutney

This chutney combines the sweet taste of plums with aromatic and warming spices. Perfect alongside cheese boards, grilled meat or as a condiment with curries.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams ripe plums
  • 1 onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 cm fresh ginger
  • 200 grams brown sugar
  • 120 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of red chilli flakes (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Wash, pit and halve the plums.
  2. Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic.
  3. Grate the ginger.

Method:

  1. Heat a saucepan over medium heat and add the onion, garlic and ginger. Cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
  2. Add the plums, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon stick, ground cloves, ground coriander, salt and chilli flakes.
  3. Simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, until the plums are soft and the chutney thickens.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice if needed.
  5. Let cool and store in sterilised jars.
