
Grandma’s tomato salad
This simple tomato salad is a true family recipe, just like grandma used to make. With ripe tomatoes and a classic sweet-and-sour dressing, it’s a delicious side dish that pairs perfectly with summer meals or hearty Dutch fare.

Ingredients (serves 4)
- 6 ripe vine tomatoes
- 3 tablespoons natural vinegar (apple cider or white wine vinegar)
- Juice of ½ lime
- 3 tablespoons fine granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon honey (or to taste)
- Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
Preparation
- Wash the tomatoes and slice them thinly.
- Arrange the slices overlapping on a large serving platter.
Instructions
- Mix vinegar, lime juice, sugar and honey in a bowl until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
- Add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper and taste the dressing. Adjust with more honey or vinegar if needed.
- Pour the dressing evenly over the tomatoes.
- Let the salad marinate at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
- Serve at room temperature for the best flavour.
