Strawberry

When locally grown strawberries become available, it means spring has arrived. Strawberries are a delicious and healthy treat for young and old alike.

Description
The strawberry belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae), and there are more than twenty species and hundreds of different varieties. Strawberries are available from greenhouses from March to the end of September. During the rest of the year, our strawberries often come from Spain or Egypt.

Growing your own strawberries
Strawberries are perennial plants that do very well in pots. The plant produces beautiful cheerful white flowers which later transform into delicious strawberries.

Eventually, runners will form that can be replanted at the end of summer. These plants can then be used for your strawberry harvest the following year. You can also continue to use the existing plants, although depending on the variety, they will produce fewer and smaller strawberries over time.

Buying and storing
When buying strawberries, look for a beautiful red shine without brown spots. Strawberries are best eaten as soon as possible. They can be stored in the fridge for a limited time.

You can also buy frozen strawberries. They are of course not as tasty as fresh ones, but they work perfectly in a smoothie or a sauce.

In the kitchen
Strawberries are of course a tasty and healthy snack, but there is so much more you can do with them: strawberry jam, cakes, smoothies, salads, and sauces.
